How Sweet the Sound

The members of the ensemble at Horn Lake High, Voci Novella, went to Tuscaloosa to take part in the University of Alabama's Honor Choir as the featured choir at this year's event.

Dr. Andrew Minear, director of choral studies at University of Alabama, said, “This is an honor given to only one high school choir each year. This invitation is recognition of the Horn Lake Choral Department’s outstanding reputation for excellence.”

The group stayed in Tuscaloosa after the concert so they could tour the campus the next day, as well as work with Dr. Minear and Dr. Kevin Fenton, guest conductor from Florida State University.  Before heading home, they participated in a choir exchange with the University of Alabama Chorus.

As the featured Guest Honor Choir, Voci Novella performed at the final concert for hundreds of students and families from across the region.

“This was an exciting few weeks for us,” said Holly Beck, director of choral studies at HLHS.  “Florida State University has one of the top choral programs in the country, and our choir got to work under the direction of Dr. Fenton.  This is an experience they will always remember.”

Kathrine Pignataro, a senior at Horn Lake High, has been involved with choir since middle school.  She said it has been a great opportunity to see the  U of A campus and perform with amazing talent.

The ensemble will perform at Disney World during Christmas break and Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania in the spring.

“I feel like this is one of the strongest choirs I have taught,” said Beck.  “They learn from each other.”
