Hernando Hills Elementary Teacher of the Year

for the 2017-18  School Year

Kim Scarberry

My name is Kim Scarberry, and I am excited to be HHES Teacher of Year! I moved to Desoto County 25 years ago when my husband, Steve, accepted a job with Quebecor Printing in Memphis. After working full time in retail, eye care, and printing, I was finally able to be a stay at home mom. When my son, Blake, started kindergarten at Horn Lake Elementary, I accepted a position as an assistant teacher in 2nd grade. During that time I worked for some wonderful teachers and became interested in earning my degree in elementary education. After my father was diagnosed with cancer, I became his primary caregiver and had to put my education on hold. I continued to work part time as a substitute teacher and fell in love with 3rd grade. Soon I would return to work as an assistant teacher at Hope Sullivan Elementary. After some encouragement from the principal, Mr. Jerry Darnell, I enrolled in classes at Northwest Community College. In 2005, I graduated from the University of Mississippi and accepted a teaching position at Oak Grove Elementary where I taught 3rd grade. A year later, with the opening of Hernando Hills Elementary, I would have the pleasure of transferring to the new school and working under a new administrator, Mrs. Stephanie Gilder. This will be my 12th year teaching 3rd grade, and I can honestly say with the help of some exceptional colleagues, I am still learning something new every day.
