A product of Olive Branch schools, the new Teacher of the Year for DeSoto County Schools, has a theory about education—she works to make learning fun and make her students smile.

“I listen to my students and find out what their interests are,” said Holly Laros Engberg, a fifth grade teacher at DeSoto Central Elementary School.  “I feel God has guided me in this path to be a teacher.”
TOY 2326 webIn her eighth year of teaching, Engberg got her education in DeSoto County.  She attended Northwest Mississippi Community College and finished her undergraduate and Master’s degrees in elementary education through the “2+2” program with the University of Mississippi—DeSoto campus. She is currently working on a Specialist’s degree at the same campus.  She is a Nationally Board Certified teacher with an emphasis as a Middle Childhood Generalist. She also has a “gifted education” endorsement.
“I plan to get my doctorate,” she said.  “I have strived to become a lifelong learner.  This is a very important aspect of the teaching profession as our world and generations of students are constantly changing.  I have consistently pushed myself to become an effective teacher of academics and a teacher of social and emotional skills as well.  My goal is to educate the ‘whole’ child.”
TOY 2306 webEngberg has served on the common Core Science/Language Arts Planning committee for the District, and serves as the adviser for the National Elementary Honor Society at DCE.  Students have to maintain a 95 GPA to be in this organization.
“Holly has proven that she is a learner, leader/collaborator, and a teacher who builds family and community partnerships,” said Brenda Wilkinson, principal at DCES.  “Her positive attitude makes her a role model for other teachers.  Her test scores are always at the top, yet she keeps a humble spirit. She inspires her students, her fellow teachers and me.”
She is married to John Jeffrey Engberg, and they have one daughter, Jenna, and are expecting a second daughter in May.
