DCHS Seeks Playoff Title

To be among the members of the MHSAA 6A football playoff party, the DeSoto Central Jaguars will need to take the steps necessary to make improvements from last fall's 6-6 overall record (3-4 in MHSAA Region 1), but have several bullets available to fire at that mark.

While 21 seniors graduated from last fall's squad, coach Matt Wallace welcomed 28 returning letter winners back for this season's team.

Among that group are seven returning starters on offense and five returning starters on defense. The Jaguars lost only four starters on offense from last season's team and five starters are gone from the Jags' defense.

Two players who are important to DeSoto Central's success this season will be returning starter Cameron Bowman at quarterback and Alan Lamar, a do-everything offensive and defensive threat.

In 12 games last season, Bowman threw for 1,336 yards and nine touchdowns, completing 130 of 208 passes. Bowman was intercepted nine times.

Lamar accounted for 2,006 all-purpose yards as a junior, 1,654 of it running the football and another 185 yards catching it. Lamar, considered one of the state's top players this year, also accounted for 147 yards in kick and punt returns and 20 yards in interception returns.

"Alan Lamar impacts the game in several different ways," Wallace said. "He was one of the the state’s leading rushers in 2014. Lamar also returns kicks and is a key player in the defensive secondary."

Others listed by Wallace as potential key players this season will be wide receiver and safety Keshun Abram, linemen Dareuan Parker, Kendall Terry and Tim Noah, middle linebacker Peyton McMahon and defensive corner John Brooks.

Wallace was pleased with the team's off-season workouts, which for some included involvement in the 7-on-7 football team that again competed in the Selects National Championships at Hoover, Ala.

But playing football in November into December remains foremost on the Jaguars' mind.

"Our team goal is to host a playoff game and put ourself in position to make a playoff run," Wallace said. "To be successful we will have to establish the run with our returning offensive linemen and our running back Alan Lamar. We will also depend on the big play capability in the passing game with Bowman and Abram."
