School district officials were notified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) that 19 students were selected as Semifinalists, and one student was selected as a Commended Scholar in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

There were 1,600 students selected nationwide. Recipients from DCS include the following:

Hernando High School: Willie Trigg, Andrew McCann, Emily MacLain

Center Hill High School: Murphy Hester, Jordan Riecke, Stephen Shol

Lewisburg High School: Front row, left to right, Caitlin Luke, Isabella Smith, Emily Mitchell. Back row, Paul Winters, Addison Green, Dylan Hughes

DeSoto Central High School: Reese Share, Emma Peacock, Silas Nelson, Jacob Camp

Lake Cormorant HighSchool: Tanner Cheek and Jaden Zinn

According to the National Merit Scholarship website, “these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.”
