Education Services
The Desoto County Juvenile Detention Center Education Program follows the non-standard 220-day Desoto County School district calendar. The school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. Standard academic curriculum as well as character training consisting of life skills, anger management, parenting, gang violence, and drugs & alcohol are included in the program. The DCJDC Education Program is funded by the Mississippi Department of Education and managed by the Desoto County School district.
Mission Statement
The mission of the DCS-operated Detention Education Program is to provide students with quality instruction through a continuum of educational programs that promote achievement, character, and the skills necessary to transition from the program with tools that enhance citizenship and life-long learning.
Program Description
The DCJDC Education Program is located within the Desoto County Juvenile Detention Center in Hernando, MS. The center is a 40-bed facility that houses both male and female students ages 11-18, who have been detained by law enforcement and/or by a court order of a judge. All eligible students detained at DCJDC attend classes offered by the education program whether in-district or not enrolled in the district. All students are expected to work on daily academic assignments whether the student is enrolled in a public school, private school, or not enrolled in school.
Program Objectives
The Juvenile Detention Center Education Program objectives are as follows:
- Provide a quality education for each student in residence at DCJDC.
- Continue identified instructional objectives for each student in residence at DCJDC.
- Provide a “seamless” instructional transition for students entering and exiting the DCJDC.
- Provide training for the faculty and staff in support of the Education Program.
Curriculum
Classes offered at the DCJDC Education Program follow the DeSoto County School district's curriculum and pacing guides. Subjects offered are as follows:
- Middle School– 6th, 7th, 8th grade core subjects
- English– 9, 10, 11, 12
- Math– Introduction to Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra IX, Introduction to Geometry, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, Math Analysis, Probability and Stats, Personal Finance, Discrete Math
- Science– Earth Science, Biology, Oceanography, Physics, Chemistry (no lab)
- Social Studies– World Geography, World History & Geography (I & II), MS/ US History, MS/ US Government
- Independent Study
- TABE / GED Program
- APEX
- CLASSWORKS (network based)
- EdOptions (web-based GED)
