General Information
ADMISSIONS INFORMATION
Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before September 1 of the school year in which they are enrolling. First grade students must be 6 years old on or before September 1. Ages must be verified by a certified birth certificate. A MS Health Department Immunization Form, 121, must be submitted to the school. Two proffs of residency in the Hernando School area are required. One residency proof must be a mortgage document property deed, an apartment, or home lease PLUS a current utility bill. The child's social security card is required.
HOURS OF OPERATION
7:00 am - Teachers Arrive
7:05 am - Students may enter the building from buses and cars, teachers are on duty, and students will wait in cafeteria and the PE building
7:40 am - Academic day begins; tardy after this time
2:20 pm - Begin loading buses and cars
2:50 pm - ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE GONE FROM THE SCHOOL
Children who arrive after 7:40 a.m. must be accompanied by an adult into the building to check-in.
IMMUNIZATIONS & VACCINATIONS
State Law requires that every student must have evidence of successful vaccination for the following immunizations: DTAP, Polio, Hepatitis B, MMR, and Varicella (2 shots).
School insurance will be offered at the beginning of each school year. The cost is small compared to the potential cost of medical care and parents are encouraged to take advantage of the services.
MEAL PLAN
This is a prepayment system to pay for your child's lunch online with a credit card. The day's meal cost is subtracted at the computer in the cafeteria every day. SCHOOL LUNCH MENU
We will send a printed copy of the menu home monthly. DeSoto County has a registered dietitan in charge of nutrition who makes the menus and purchases food.

PETS
Absolutely no animals are allowed at the school at any time.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
A new state law requires that each child receive 30 minutes of supervised physical education activity per day. This time has been taken out of recess time. Some days the PE teacher or assistant may take a class to the playground to use the equipment there.
PROMOTION AND RETENTION
According to MS State Law and DeSoto County School Board Policy, Kindergarten retention is a joint decision by teacher and parents. For first grade, promotion to the next grade is determined by a grade of 70 or above in reading and math and English. Teachers will begin discussing grades and retention possibility with parents after the second nine weeks.
TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks are owned by DeSoto County Schools are issued to students for use during a school year. Some of these books are consumable. Fines are charged for damaged boods and replacement fees are charged for lost books. Students should make every effort to take care of textbooks and not tear or mark them. They have to last from five to six years and be used by many students.
