Welcome to the OBIS Parent Teacher Association web site. Here’s where you can find out what’s going on and who’s in charge and how you can help! We have many events throughout the year that aren’t just to raise money for the school, but to let the kids have some fun. Working together, we can give our kids a great foundation for learning.

Upcoming Events

Book Fair

7:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. daily, November 14-18, 2011

The Scholastic Book Fair returns to OBIS November 14-18.  The Book Fair will offer affordable books at all reading and interest levels. Each classroom will have set times to allow the kids to preview and choose books. Help connect a kid with a book by volunteering an hour of your time to assist during the Book Fair. We’ll also earn books and funds for our school and classroom libraries!

Santa’s Workshop

8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. daily, December 5-9, 2011

Let the kids do a little holiday shopping of their own at the OBIS Santa’s Workshop. The “shop” will be open 8 AM – 2 PM the week of December 5-9. We’ll have items that make great gifts for kids to give to Mom, Dad or siblings, such as picture frames or book marks. Most items will be priced $1 to $2, and nothing will be more than $5. The gifts will come home already wrapped! Each classroom will be given shopping time during school hours.

What We Need

We need wrapping paper, bows and tags—and a few Santa’s helpers to do the wrapping! If you can volunteer for a shift at the workshop or help wrap the week before, please send us a note via e-mail or by printing out and completing this form [need link to PDF of flyer] and returning it to your child’s teacher. If you have paper, bows or tags to share, send them to school. Your time and efforts are appreciated!

Ongoing Projects

Box Tops for Education

Keep those Box Tops coming! We kicked off a campaign to collect Box Tops for Education in October, but we’ll be collecting Box Tops throughout the year. Our goal for this year is to raise $1,500 for OBIS through the Box Tops program. We can achieve this if each student turns in 25 labels over the course of the school year.

For every Box Top label collected, the school will earn 10 cents. All you need to do is find and cut off those little Box Top labels from participating products you probably already have in your home. Products such as cereals, plastic bags, etc., carry the Box Tops labels. Then put the labels in a Ziploc bag marked with your child’s name, grade and teacher’s name, and send them to school with your child.

Prizes will be awarded to the classroom with the greatest percentage of participation and to the classroom and individual who collects the most Box Tops. If we meet or exceed our goal of $1,500, there will be a special surprise for the entire school!

Go to http://www.boxtops4education.com and sign up to support our school. You can see much our school is earning with Box Tops, print coupons for Box Tops brands, or shop online.

Fundraising: How Are Your Dollars Spent?

In the 2010-2011 school year, the OBIS PTA purchased or provided funds to cover the following:

•          23 books for students to read in their classrooms,

•          5 NEO mobile keyboards for the library,

•          3 tether balls and poles for the playground,

•          1 SMART Board interactive whiteboard for classroom use,

•          and an art teacher to instruct our students!

The funds raised through the OBIS Parent Teacher Association make your children’s school a better place to learn. Our goal is to give our teachers the tools they need to create an environment of growth and learning.

Yes, the PTA has a lot of fundraisers, but those monies are put back into the school in places where they are needed the most. OBIS would not have an art teacher for 2010-2011 without PTA funds. While the Accelerated Reader program is an important part of our curriculum, in the library, students often must wait until the librarian can set them up at a computer to take AR tests. Five new NEO mobile keyboards for the school library will help students make better use of their library time and allow our librarian to better meet the children’s needs.

How Can I Help?

Your time, effort, and fundraising support to the PTA would be greatly appreciated. If you have an hour or two you can give to events such as the Book Fair or Santa’s Workshop, or in helping us count all those Box Tops, we would welcome and appreciate your help. If you have other skills you’d like to offer, please let us know.

For more information on how you can volunteer to help, get in touch with a PTA officer. To help out with upcoming events, take a look at these individual event sign-up forms. Print out and return to the school one of these forms with your contact information and availability.
