The Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council is comprised of 43 student representatives from DeSoto County Schools' eight high schools. They were recognized by the Board of Education at the November recessed meeting.
The sponsors are Anne Goss, counselor at Hernando High School, and Jeff Shands, U.S. History teacher and Cross Country Coach at DeSoto Central High School.
The program started in 2006, and it is designed to help high school students develop leadership skills. Students serve their junior and senior years, and they study both government and entrepreneurship during their time in the program.
"These students were chosen for their academic skills and their leadership skills," said Shands.
"This is truly an amazing group of students. We have National Merit Semifinalists, athletes, and the best and brightest students in our schools.”
“SYLC is a grant-based program. The Homer Skelton Foundation and the Delta Regional Foundation have kept this program running, and we are grateful for their generous contributions,” Shands said.
